About This Song
About "Winterreise, D. 911: No. 4, Erstarrung" by Christian Gerhaher
Schubert's frozen landscape hardens into stone as Gerhaher sings of numbness that is itself a kind of agony. The piano's icy repetitions mirror a heart locked in place, and the baritone's restraint makes the chill more piercing—a portrait of grief so deep it has forgotten how to thaw.
