About "The Ballad of Barrett Rude, Sr." by André De Shields
A ballad for a patriarch who never quite was—Barrett Rude, Sr. drifts through memory like smoke in a rented hall. De Shields delivers the elegy with theatrical restraint, the ache of a son's inheritance. Softness here is not folk; it's the hush before confession.
