About "Piano Sonata No. 20 in G Major, Op. 49 No. 2 : Beethoven: Piano Sonata No. 20 in G Major, Op. 49 No. 2: II. Tempo di menuetto" by Emil Gilels
Beethoven's Tempo di menuetto is a stately dance with a crooked smile. Gilels finds the wit beneath the politeness, the minuet's courtly steps occasionally stumbling into unexpected harmonic corners. It's the calm of a drawing-room dance, undercut by a restless, forward-looking spirit.
