About This Song
About "John Henry" by Billy Preston
Preston's gospel-rooted piano drives this folk hero's tale with locomotive force. The hammering keys mimic John Henry's relentless swing, capturing the tension between sweat-soaked determination and the looming specter of mechanized obsolescence—a celebration and a eulogy in one.
