About "Der Leiermann" by Andreas Schmidt
Schubert's hurdy-gurdy man arrives through In Bruges like a ghost at the edge of a canal—Schmidt's baritone bare, weary, almost spoken. The snow and the frozen street become an image of isolation, and the music holds a terrible calm, dread pooling quietly beneath the repeated, tuneless drone.
