About "The Nutcracker (Suite), Op. 71a, TH 35 : Tchaikovsky: The Nutcracker (Suite), Op. 71a, TH 35: IIf. Dance of the Reed-Pipes (Mirlitons)" by Boston Pops Orchestra
Tchaikovsky's reeds chirp like porcelain flutes, a miniature ballet of piping mirlitons. The Boston Pops conjure delicate clockwork: each phrase a spun-sugar ornament, calm surface over a quietly whirring mechanism. It's holiday nostalgia as intricate confection, sweet but tinged with the melancholy of toys wound too tight.
