About This Song
About "Matthäus-Passion, BWV 244, Pt. 2 : J.S. Bach: Matthäus-Passion, BWV 244, Pt. 2: No. 52, Aria. Können Tränen meiner Wangen (Alto)" by Christa Ludwig
Aria of liquid sorrow: the alto asks if tears can flow from her cheeks, and the strings answer with a slow, falling figure like rain down a windowpane. Ludwig balances Baroque restraint with an almost unbearable intimacy, each phrase a droplet that gathers weight before falling.
