About "Messiah, HWV 56 / Pt. 2 : Handel: Messiah, HWV 56 / Pt. 2: 21. "He was despised"" by Anne Sofie Von Otter
Handel’s 'He was despised' becomes a slow, aching meditation. Von Otter’s mezzo is a vessel of collective grief, each phrase weighted with sorrow and quiet dignity. The tension lies in restraint—emotion held in check until it becomes almost unbearable, like tears frozen behind a stoic mask.
